To The Editor:
This letter was sent to Premier Shawn Graham:
I am a student at Université de Moncton. I have seen the ever growing protest in my region against uranium mining. I’m sure that if you’ve been in the area recently you’ve noticed the hundreds of “No Uranium Mines” signs in people’s windows. The fact of the matter is that we don’t want uranium mining or even exploration in New Brunswick.
My suggestion is that we should have a referendum to determine whether or not people in New Brunswick want to ban uranium mining activity here indefinitely. It is not healthy for the environment or for people’s health.
If 99 per cent of New Brunswickers oppose uranium mines (which seems to be the case), then giving them a voice to oppose uranium mining is as important as giving them the voice to vote in an election. It certainly shows them where your environmental and even health priorities lie.
I hope you will take this recommendation seriously.
Patrick Thibeault,
Moncton
