Save Lake Huron from a Nuclear Dump

Progress Michigan has launched an online petition against a proposed nuclear dump 1/2 mile from Lake Huron in Canada and a massive oil refinery in Sarnia. Unfortunately, at first, Canadians couldn’t sign the petition. It wouldn’t take the Canadian zip codes. That is all fixed, now and Canadians can sign on!

The nuclear dump will take waste from 20 Canadian reactors and have to store it and isolate it from the environment for hundreds of years. Lake Huron is a drinking water source for millions of people in Michigan.

Citizens for Alternatives to Chemical Contamination, (along with many other Great Lakes environmental groups,) has been leading the charge against this proposal. The petition will grow the list of supporters standing with them against these risky projects.

You can sign the petition at: www.greatlakesnotadump.com. Please pass the link on to friends and neighbors.

  1. Nuclear is dangerous!

  2. To whom it may concern,
I am writing this letter to oppose any further development of a nuclear waste dump on or near Lake Huron. It is very disappointing that there it is even an option to put hazardous materials so close to a precious resource, without which we could not continue to exist. When will our decisions be based on quality of life for all living organisms and balance within the world that we live. I beg of you to reconsider and find other alternatives to satisfy our energy problems. Ever since I was a little girl I have been a part of the living system around Lake Huron. It is a oasis of natural beauty that reminds us of the life that exists on this earth with us, so commonly and easily forgotten in the city. Our ideologies have to see the web of the entire system and the consequential effects of these relationships if we are to continue to coexist on this earth. A decision to dump such a hazardous material near such a large water source would not reflect a commitment to live aware of our connections to the living systems that surrounds us. There is no amount research or literature that would convince me otherwise.
